It is well known that regular physical exercise during pregnancy is very beneficial for mother and baby. Sports in pregnant women reduces the stress level, allows for better rest, helps to strengthen the lumbar and abdominal muscles to avoid back pain and sciatica, and helps to maintain tone and regain physical shape more quickly after delivery.

Recently a new benefit has been found to the practice of physical exercise in pregnant women. Researchers from the Faculty of Physical Activity and Sports Sciences (INEF) of the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM) have shown how the percentage of instrumental deliveries and cesarean section is lower in women than maintain regular and supervised physical practice during pregnancy than in those who have an inactive pregnancy.

According to gynecologists, women who live a sedentary pregnancy, with a poor diet and poor posture, put the proper development of pregnancy and childbirth at risk. All obstetricians recommend healthy habits during pregnancy to their patients, such as: walking every day and eating a correct diet.

The INEF team of researchers developed clinical trials with healthy pregnant women who had passed the first medical consultation (at week 12 of pregnancy). The women who participated in the program participated in sessions of controlled physical exercise three days a week. Each session lasted 50 minutes and aerobic, muscle toning, and pelvic floor strengthening exercises were performed. The physical exercise program was carried out until week 38 or 39 of pregnancy.

The results showed that a lower percentage of instrumental deliveries and cesarean section was registered in these women than in a group of women who developed an inactive pregnancy.

Sometimes pregnant women feel tired, especially in the final stretch of pregnancy, and find it difficult to stay active, however, this study should encourage all women not to live their pregnancy in a sedentary way. Physical exercise such as daily walking, swimming, yoga or Pilates have proven to be very positive for the health of the mother and her baby.
